Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Shrubs or shrubby trees 2–4(–12) m tall.

Stems: Trunk up to 20 cm in diameter, branches spreading, leafy toward apex, glabrous or yellowish brown pubescent on new growth and inflorescences.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades spatulate to oblanceolate or elliptic–obovate, rarely elliptic, usually 10–50 cm long, 2.5–20 cm wide. Apex rounded to obtuse, acute, or sometimes acuminate. Base rounded to obtuse or acute. Surfaces glabrous or lower surfaces puberulent, especially on veins, usually paler on lower surface, coriaceous. Margins entire, sometimes slightly revolute. Lateral veins subopposite, ascending, straight ca. ¾ their length, then dividing to unite with the distinct submarginal vein, midrib sulcate on upper surface. Petioles (0–)10–95 mm long. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 3–5 in axillary cymes, peduncles 0–30 mm long, pedicels 6–30 mm long, bracts ovate–subulate or deltate. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Calyx of 4 sepals, in imbricated pairs, broadly ovate, 8–10 mm long, subpersistent, ciliolate, otherwise glabrous, or sparsely to densely puberulent. Corolla of 4 petals, white or cream, slightly spreading at anthesis, oblong–ovate or oblong–obovate, 14–21 mm long, slightly imbricate. Stamens 8; filaments white, nearly completely connate into a staminal tube; anthers dithecal, subsessile on lobes of staminal tube, elongate, base subhastate. Ovary superior, 4-lobed, ± puberulent, usually becoming glabrate, carpels connate adaxially throughout their length, placentation axile; ovules 5–8 per carpel, pendulous on short, broad funiculi; style ca. 9 mm long, subclavate; stigmas linear.

Fruit: Fruit subglobose; 20–35 mm in diameter; 4–lobed; glabrous or minutely puberulent; carpels erect; connate throughout; separating at various places during development; adnate to summit; apex rounded. Seeds 5–8 per cell; funicles short; endocarp glabrous; embryo with thin; broad; rounded cotyledons; hypocotyl very short; embedded in white endosperm.

Ploidy:

Habitat: Mesic to wet forest.

Elevation Range: 450–1,420 m.
